Welcome to family, friends and visitors. Here you will find interesting (hopefully) pictures of my part of the world, news of our household and probably, long ramblings about anything that catches my interest.

No More Storm. 8/12/24

Somehow I didn't post this last night.
It was such a relief to wake this morning and find that the storm had blown itself out. True the winds were blowing from the north and the air has felt icy all day long but at least we weren't trapped in our homes. Yesterday the wind was so strong that although I could walk along the sheltered passageway by the side of the house it was hard to even stand up in the street when I went out to check on the roof.
There was another power cut in the night and a part of the village wasn't due to have power until the afternoon. Even though my pc was switched off something was awry this morning and Peter had to reset the system (or something like that) to get it up and running again. No problem we thought, that's why we have the laptop but when I tried turning that on it asked for passwords, something we've never set up as I specifically didn't want one. More techy work needed before that was up and running and I could do my Duo Lingo.
On a positive note following declaring a state of emergency for four counties the police put a post on FB asking anyone who was in difficulties due to the power cuts to get in touch with them and they would provide help. They also put up a lot of useful contact numbers to report fallen trees etc. and asked people if they could to check on vulnerable neighbours

The first thing I did this morning was to check for any damage. Above is our neighbours' fence which took a battering. I've sent them photos as that is their second home. (Our garage and back garden are at right angles to the house and front garden and that is our back garden with the wavy trellis.) I climbed up to the flat roof above my study and retrieved the fallen tile which had been making an incredible amount of noise for just one tile. Peter thinks we may have a few loose tiles as well. Out in the street the thrashing of the front garden hedge had knocked down a couple of the coping stones from the garden wall. I can easily stick those back on. The next thing was to wash all the salt off the windows and glass balustrade after which I was glad to come back in out of the cold.

I spent the afternoon making biscuits; lebkuchen which for once are not rock hard, peanut and chocolate chip cookies and double chocolate cookies. These are all for Christmas gifts as I need to send one parcel off by the end of the week.
Finally a photo of our local Morrisons. This is funny in both English and Welsh as moron means carrot. There were lots of photos of fallen trees, flooding and downed power lines on local FB pages. At one point yesterday there was not a single way that we could get to town, three routes were blocked by fallen trees and one by flooding.
