Of course it had to be raining last night on the eve of peak viewing of the Perseids. However when the street lights, including the one at the bottom of the garden went out at 2.00 there was a break in the cloud cover. Only a third of the night sky was visible for a while but in that short time I spotted four meteors. Even though we live in the town we're on the edge of the countryside and Exmoor which is a dark sky reserve and the stars can be easily seen on clear nights.
Early morning rain gave way to grey skies and finally short spells of sun in the afternoon. The cherry tomatoes are coming on nicely and the Alicante tomatoes are almost ready to pick.
We can see the nights drawing in and the acers have begun to change into their autumn colours. In my mind August is a summer month and autumn doesn't begin until September so I'm waiting for the sunny weather to return.
Late in the afternoon I did some gardening, dead heading the rose bush and clearing the rose petals from the decking. The fallen petals start off looking very romantic strewn across the wood but all too soon they turn brown and squidgy ending up stuck to the deck.
