Welcome to family, friends and visitors. Here you will find interesting (hopefully) pictures of my part of the world, news of our household and probably, long ramblings about anything that catches my interest.

We Did It.

Or rather Peter did it with some assistance from me.
Following on from his success at putting up brackets and the coat hooks today Peter tackled the big mirror. We'd put it on the list of things for our builder to do but with the lockdown etc it looked as if we would have to wait a very long time before it got done. Back in Pilton our friend and meticulous finisher (his description) had put the mirror up for us. Peter was explaining to me how Wayne had an adjustable support which enabled him to do the job on his own when I came up with a pretty good (if I say so myself) idea. Why not use the chest of drawers from our bedroom, which was nearly the right height, to support the mirror frame while we fixed it to the wall? A couple of pieces of wood got the mirror level with the windows and away we went.
The mirror backing holds the history of the mirror. Who put it up (mostly us), took it down and the dates. We were given the mirror back in 1986 when we helped clear a friend's parents' flat in Knightsbridge and made the basic frame to put it up over the brick fireplace in our London house.
We thought about putting the sofa under the mirror facing the sea but it's too long so instead the little desk went there. It makes the room look so much bigger. I took the dust sheets off the sofa and arm chair, gave them a good shake and now they're back on again until the builder plasters down the sides of the French doors.
Originally the big pine cupboard was going to be under the mirror, I had the chimney breast made wide enough but it looks so good in the dining room that it now lives there. The smaller pine mirror will go over it but not until the new kitchen is installed in case we need to move the cupboard a little.
I finished off my day by filling a black bag with brambles and escallonia and having a long chat with a new neighbour from further along the cliff but I've forgotten her name. She was yet another of the neighbours who looked after Chick, had him and the chap next door over for Christmas dinner with her older relatives, that sort of thing though sadly Chick was a very private person and retreated into himself towards the end of his days.
Yesterday evening we were settling down to watch tv when we saw a firework. It was bonfire night but the usual display at Aber was cancelled so we weren't expecting anything. But we stood out on the terrace and were treated to a display of BIG fireworks being let off from the beach. Apart from what seems to be a mention on the Borth community page (which has some nice photos) of someone complaining that there hadn't been any warning for pet owners, I haven't found any information. I forgot to ask the lady I was speaking to earlier. Maybe they were some of the fireworks that had been due for Aber's display or else somebody has very deep pockets.
